Quick answer
The Slav Defense starts 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6. Black defends d5 with the c-pawn and keeps the light-squared bishop free to come out to f5 or g4. It's a solid answer to the Queen's Gambit that avoids the blocked-in bishop of the Queen's Gambit Declined.

- Best for
- Players who want a solid defense with active pieces
- Style
- Solid and flexible
- Main idea
- Support d5 with ...c6, develop the c8 bishop before ...e6
The main line, move by move
In the main line, Black takes on c4 and develops the bishop to f5. Step through it, then practice Black's moves.
How the Slav works
The pawn on c6 protects d5 just like ...e6 does in the Queen's Gambit Declined, but it doesn't block the c8 bishop. That's the big advantage. In return, the c6 pawn takes the best square from Black's queen's knight.
Black's plan
- Develop the c8 bishop to f5 or g4 before ...e6.
- Take on c4 when White's bishop is still on f1, and use the time to develop.
- Free the position with ...c5 or ...e5.
The Exchange Slav
Some White players trade on d5 to get a symmetrical, quiet position. Black can simply develop: the position is equal.
Common beginner mistakes in the Slav
- Playing ...e6 before developing the bishop. That turns the Slav into a passive QGD.
- Trying to hold the c4 pawn at all costs. Grabbing it is fine; defending it with many pawn moves isn't.
- Copying White forever in the Exchange Slav. Watch for the move where copying fails tactically.
Frequently asked questions
Slav or Queen's Gambit Declined: which is better for beginners?
Both are excellent. The Slav keeps the c8 bishop free; the QGD keeps a slightly more solid center. Try both and see which positions you enjoy.
What's the Semi-Slav?
The Semi-Slav combines ...c6 and ...e6. It's very rich and can become sharp, so it's best learned after the basic Slav.
